Francis Lord 8th Lord Napier, 1758-1823, was commissioned as a officer in the British Army, later serving under General Burgoyne in the American Revolution and captured at the Battle of Saratoga. Returning to Scotland, he became theGrand Master of the Scottish Grand Masonic Lodge and laid the cornerstone of the new buildings of Edinburgh University in 1789. Portrait painter William Shiels (1783-1857, south Carolina, New York and Great Britain) was a founding member andDirector of the South Carolina Academy of Fine Arts, exhibited at the American Academy in New York, member of the Royal Scottish Academy and exhibited at the Royal Academy in London. He was also a Freemason in the United States and GreatBritain. The portrait is signed Wm. Shiels 1809, gilt framed and bears a plaque erroneously calling the sitter 7th Lord Napier instead of the 8th, which is correct. The portrait has been conserved. Measure 60” in height by 46-3/4" in width withthe stretcher measuring 51" in height by 41” in width, each. All measurements are approximate.

Signed lower right M. J. Heade (Martin Johnson Heade, 1819 -1904, New York, California, Florida, Brazil). This specific painting is not included in the Stebbins catalog Raisonne, but Heade was known to paint multiple red rose still lifes with the cut glass tumbler on the curly maple edged table from approximately 1883 through the 1890's. There is slight paint flaking below the lower rose and with frame scraping all around. Period canvas and stretcher in a 1950's frame. Needs cleaning and careful conservation. Painting is 14 1/8" high, 10 1/8" wide. Frame is 19 3/4" high, 15 7/8" wide. NOTE: For this item, we would prefer that interested bidders examine it in person or send a trusted advisor to examine.
